Former carers

What do we mean by a former carer?

Former carers are people who are no longer carrying out a caring role, for example, because the person being cared for has died.  This does not include situations where the person being cared for moves into supported accommodation such as residential or nursing care, as carers often continue to have responsibilities in these situations and require support, even if their role is significantly reduced.

Carers Centre Newcastle's commitment to former carers

We recognise that a carer's need for support does not end abruptly once they become a former carer.  The emotional, financial and social impact of being a carer, continues to affect the lives of many former carers, often for a long period of time.
