Former Carers

What do we mean by a former carer?

Former carers are people who are no longer carrying out a caring role, for example, because the person being cared for has died.
This does not include situations where the person being cared for moves into supported accomodation such as residential or nursing care, as carers often continue to have responsiblities in these situations and require support, even if their role is significantly reduced.

Carers Centre Newcastle's commitment to former carers

1.  Carers Centre Newcastle's helps carers move on

We recognise that a carers need for support does not end abruptly once they become a former carer.  The emotional, financial and social impact of being a carer continues to affect the lives of many former carers, often for a long period of time.

    How can we help?

  • Factsheet on sources of help and support for former carers
  • Transitional support service - carers who become former carers while receiving services from us are able to access our carers' services for a period of up to six months following the end of their caring role, to help ease the transition to their new life.
  • Support groups - the Carers Centre supports a number of groups that welcome former carers as members.

2.  Carers Centre Newcastle values former carers

We recognise and value the wealth of knowledge and skills that former carers have.

    How can we help?
